Homily

(24 October 2008)

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus affirms in very clear terms: “You know how to interpret the face of the earth and the sky. How is it you do not know how to interpret these times?” (Lk 12,56) The signs of the coming of the Kingdom of God are proclaimed by Jesus in his preaching and miracles, and in his very person. God is among his People, and many do not realize. Even today, the Lord continues to be close to us. He sends us his signs that we may recognize him. He invites us to discover his presence in our life, in the profound meaning of historical events, as well as in the ordinary events of our daily life. We experience the Lord in moments of sickness and pain. We are also invited to meet him in our friends, our colleagues, our families and all those who cross our paths. It would be a pity if we fail to recognize him because of the troubles and distractions of life.

The Second Vatican Council reminds us that the Church is continually called to discern these signs and to respond to them. Our Christian witness lies at the very foundation of this response.

As we are gathered together for this solemn liturgy, St Paul’s words in today’s First reading are indeed fitting at the opening of your proceedings. The Apostle reminds us of our duty to strengthen the bond between our actions and God’s call which lies at the very root of our identity. May your meeting be an experience of communion in the Holy Spirit that you may be instruments of the Lord’s gifts to humanity!
